Possum Banksia
Banksia baueri
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
The Possum Banksia is a native of south-western West Australia where it prefers sandy, well-drained soils in an open, sunny position. It is drought, frost and salt air hardy but a smaller plant is to be had in salt conditions. Despite being a winter rainfall plant (Mediterranean climate) it is tolerant of some humidity.
A shrub growing to 2 metres (7ft) with a spread of 3 metres (10ft), it has distinctive, tough leaves being up to 130mm long with toothing along the margins. The flowers are large, cream to orange with greyish hairs which occur in late winter to spring. The fruits are large cones with follicles that release the seeds only after a fire and can be used ornamentally.
This plant, though slow, grows readily from seed.
