A native of the tropical regions of the world that will grow as a semi-deciduous tree in the sub-tropics and grow as a perennial in temperate/frosty climates. This tree is drought tolerant but does not like frosts hence the different forms as the climate changes.
An evergreen tree growing to 7 metres (12ft) in the tropics with a considerable spread. In the sub-tropics it is a smaller tree that can be pruned into shape, while in temperate zones its growth will be as a multi-stemmed returning perennial. The different growth forms do not affect flowering which commences in the first season.
The stem is erect and grows to 4.5 metres in cultivation, the leaves are compound, fern-like with many leaflets, the flowers are profuse, orange and red, bowl shaped and 75mm (3in) across.
