This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.
Celosia, or Cockscomb is a native of tropical Africa where it prefers well-drained, moist, fertile soils, though it will tolerate dryness. A full sun plant that tolerates heat well.
Growing to 1.2m (4ft) with a spread of 30cm (1ft); leaves are alternate, entire (seldom lobed), linear to lanceolate to 50mm long, green but occasionally red; flowers are a spiked plume in vivid scarlet. This cultivar is used in both the cut flower and dried flower industries because of the very long stems achieved by cutting at the base of the stem.
When harvesting flowers, only choose those that are full and mature as immature flower stems will wilt.
Propagation by seed occurs readily.
