An Australian native that is widespread in Victoria, has a presence in South Australia, on the north and south coast and northern and southern tablelands of New South Wales extending into Queensland. It is also native to New Zealand and is drought and frost tolerant and very hardy. The common name Burgan is Aboriginal and Kanuka is Maori.
A tall shrub or tree growing to 5 metres with the young stems being pubescent (hairy). The leaves are variable, narrow-elliptic to oblanceolate to 25mm long and 4.5mm wide and pleasantly aromatic when crushed; the flowers are white with five orbicular petals surrounding a purplish receptacle and appear from November to February (southern hemisphere).
A very tough plant used for regeneration work as it freely seeds and slowly spreads.
This plant grows readily from seed.
