A native of tropical India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), and Indo-China that has become naturalised in many parts of the world including Australia. The Australian presence occurs on a coastal strip north from Broome in West Australia into the Northern Territory.
A medium evergreen tree branching from low on the trunk, it has glossy, dark green leaves arranged spirally on the end of the branches; flowers are pale yellow, fragrant; fruit is ovoid berries 2 – 3 cm long, orange-red when ripe, the sweet, yellow pulp can be eaten fresh.
This tree has medicinal properties, durable wood used for heavy construction and produces an edible oil from its pressed seeds.
