Parrot Tree or Hottentot Bean
Schotia brachypetala
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List
A native of South Africa, it prefers light to medium, well-drained soils in a protected sunny position. It is both drought and frost tender though I have seen growing on a hillside where the flat areas are receiving a minus 7 degrees C.
An evergreen tree growing to a height of 10 metres with a spread of 4 metres. The stem is erect with spreading branches, the leaves are complex with glossy green leaflets and the flowers are deep red, pea-shaped and occur in showy, terminal clusters.
This tree is very much sought after by parrots for the abundance of nectar produced by the flowers. So much so that the nectar ferments in the bird’s stomach causing them to become quite tipsy. During flowering, it is advisable to lock up the cat!
Offered as a packet of 5 seeds with grownotes.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
